Though 150 years old, the story Les Miserables has been reborn for the 21st Century through film. But as David reflects on the story, he feels that it’s popularity is not only due in part to the quality of art. The story requires the audience to ask itself “What would I do?” in the face of injustice and poverty. It requires us to act.

Bridging the gap, saving lives
I honestly don’t know how many bridges I crossed this morning on the way to work. I drive on a freeway that crosses over myriad side streets, and navigates a pass through the Phoenix North Mountain nature preserve. I don’t even think about the steel and concrete that take me 16 miles to work and [...]

“You will always have the poor among you …”
I can’t prove it, but after many years of pastoral experience, including numerous conversations on the subject with believers and non-believers alike, I’m convinced this is the best known reference in the Bible concerning poverty. For believers especially, this is frequently quoted as proof that poverty will always exist and cannot be overcome. Because this [...]

End poverty by starting relationships
Every morning, thousands of Food for the Hungry staff walk, bicycle or drive into some of the most vulnerable communities in the world. Ending poverty is ultimately about the relationships and sharing of ideas that happen during these daily exchanges around the world, day in and day out. Eva Amor is one of FH’s staff building these [...]

What’s in your toolbox?
I rode into work this morning with my friend Charith, and we talked about a mutual friend working in China. Our friend observed that an uncommon number of Chinese seem to be wearing glasses. Charith asked, “Why do you think so many people have bad eyes?” Community development professionals observe and ask these questions all the time. As a former community [...]

Call your church to action for foreign assistance
Most Americans overestimate the percentage of the U.S. budget spent on foreign assistance. Here’s a video showing just how drastic the difference is between typical perceptions and the actual amount. (Spoiler alert: It’s less than 1% of the federal budget.) Yet these programs are life-saving. According to our friends at ONE, “Thanks to the United [...]

Reflections from the Inauguration
Several things came together in my mind as I stood with a throng of people of all ages, sizes and colors on the Capitol Mall in Washington, D.C., to witness the second inauguration of Barack Obama as president of the United States. The first was the historical significance of the year 2013. It was 150 years [...]
