“In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way, we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He himself said, “It is more blessed to give than receive.“ Acts 20:35 (ESV)
We don’t have to go very far to discover God’s truth about giving … that it is far better to give than to receive. I learned a deeper understanding of this truth from the classic Christian rock group, Degarmo and Key.. (I know I’m dating myself a bit here.)
My favorite song was called, “Destined to Win.” I used to listen to that song over and over. Nearly four years ago, I was shocked to read the news that Dana Key, lead singer of Degarmo and Key, had unexpectedly passed away at the age of 56.
As the news came about his passing, and memorials and tributes flooded the Internet, there was an entry from one of his daughters. She had thanked all the friends and fans that were showering their family with love and condolences.
She also had shared several of Dana’s original life quotes that he lived by. There were many great and memorable quotes from him, but there was one that particularly stood out to me and I’ve never forgotten it since the day I read it. His quote was this…
You are blessed three times more when you give. When you receive a gift, yours is the only blessing. However, when you give a gift… you are blessed, the person you gave the gift to is blessed, and most importantly God is glorified and He is blessed.”
I had never thought of giving and receiving in such a way until the day I read that quote. It inspired me deeply, and in such a way that I hope that I remain mindful of not being focused on receiving in this life.
With giving the gifts I have to offer with my time, talent and treasure, I want to focus on others. It’s my heart’s desire to see the blessings multiplied.
Maybe you’ve been considering lately giving more of your time, talent and treasure. Please prayerfully consider Food for the Hungry (FH), if you’re seeking to give more of what you’ve been blessed with.
You can sponsor a child with FH, or sign-up to be a volunteer or advocate, or go on a mission trip and get your church involved with FH. Thank you for your giving heart, and may you continue to receive blessings from above as you give of yourself to further God’s kingdom.
