Creating Sustainable Change

photo oneHow do you create sustainable change?

You empower leaders to envision and lead plans for  their community. Food for the Hungry (FH) works with community members to coach and train them to be leaders—we call it capacity building.

Each year in Cambodia, FH staff and community leaders identify one or two priorities for the community. Then, FH staff trains, coaches and encourages leaders to direct existing projects. Depending on the project, leaders could learn to use water treatment systems, write for government grants for their village, establish partnerships for expanding markets and so much more.

As leaders build this confidence and skill set, FH phases out from their community, so leaders can continue developing on their own.

FH staff also train leaders on their moral obligation and how to motivate others. This past April, FH staff trained village leaders (9 men and 11 women) from five villages in Thlat area, so leaders could learn:

  • Their role in serving the poor.
  • How to lead their community successfully.
  • How to share their responsibility according their role.
  • Leading tips from biblical principles.

The men and women who attended the training shared their past experiences in leading people including knowledge, attitude and practices.

Touch Rum, 56, who is a village leader in Toul Prasat, said, “Before, I led people by bringing the ideas, orders from the higher level and sharing with people. Through this training, I know that I have to serve people, especially the poor, to reach their God- given potential.”

As you partner with FH to build good leadership in impoverished communities, great change happens. Leaders acquire skills to create better schools, clean water systems, sanitation and more – and children grow up in safer, nurturing communities so they can thrive!
