I got on the plane in Cincinnati bound for Nashville and took my seat toward the back of the plane. While doing some Food for the Hungry (FH) work on my laptop, a tall, stately gentlemen caught my eye. I thought to myself, “I know I know him, but from where?” And then I connected [...]

Thankful for God’s grace and FH partnerships
I was recently blessed to spend two days with my leadership team in Food for the Hungry’s (FH) Resource and Program Development (RPD) Department. We started the two-day annual planning meeting with FH leaders from around the world reflecting on signs of God’s grace in our lives and in FH field programs. We concluded our [...]

Focused on Children, Dedicated to Transformation
I’m in the Dominican Republic this week, where I have the incredible privilege of joining my Food for the Hungry (FH) colleagues from all over Latin America as we work together to learn how to build a new model of programming in our field countries. We call it “Child-Focused Community Transformation” (CFCT), which is FH’s “essentials” [...]

‘Tis the Season
The season is upon us again. Not the changing of the leaves. Not the very end of a hurricane period that seemed to have been a quiet one, only to strike with a vengeance in the eleventh hour. Not the time of turkeys and pumpkins. No, the season that I am referring to comes only [...]

Zumba, multiplication and blessings
I am amazed when I read the passage in the New Testament about Jesus feeding the 5,000. The miracle of bread and fish multiplying before everyone’s eyes must have been unbelievable to watch. But even more interesting to me is the role played by the disciples. Jesus asks them a simple, yet profound question, “How many [...]

World Food Day: Running on Empty
On October 13 at 2 pm, I was 4/5 of the way through a half Ironman event, but had no gas left in the tank and was running on fumes. With my energy ebbing away, I had to will my body to keep going. The words in my head kept cadence with the sounds of my [...]

Village Savings Groups Save Lives
Meet Angelique. She’s a compilation of women I’ve met in rural Rwanda – all facing dire circumstances and looking to Food for the Hungry (FH) for help. Angelique has four children. She and her husband Thomas are subsistence farmers and harvest their crop of maize and beans once a year. What they don’t eat, they [...]

United Nations Report on Millennium Development Goals
I just got back from New York City where I participated in meetings connected with the United Nations (UN) General Assembly. The UN corridor in mid-town Manhattan was under heightened security as 130 Heads of States (including President Obama) participated in the Assembly. A big focus of this gathering was a review of the progress made [...]

From Fishing to Farming Fish
Food for the Hungry (FH) was honored to host members of the 112th Congress, White House, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and State Department for dinner last week. Our goal was to thank our long-standing partners and to initiate a fresh dialog about assisting the world’s most vulnerable people. . I shared three [...]

Four Ways You Can Help Protect the Poor This Election Season
See How President Obama and Governor Romney Express Their Views on Hunger. I’m encouraged that my colleagues at Bread for the World and the Circle of Protection group have inserted the topic of poverty into the presidential election. At a press conference in Washington, D.C., today, Bread for the World President, David Beckman, introduced several [...]
