Thinking back on my initial decision to sponsor a child, I can see it was kind of a spur of the moment choice. It happened on my very first day of serving on the staff of Food for the Hungry (FH). During new staff orientation, I learned that I could check a box and sponsor [...]

Julio’s story: Starting a new child sponsorship
My guest blogger today is Ryan Horn, a Food for the Hungry employee and child sponsor. Ryan shares what it was like to get news that his sponsored child had graduated…and then how he began another sponsorship with a different child…all of it happening right in Gautemala. A couple of years ago, I took a [...]

Melinda Evans: Celebrating her passion to love God and her neighbor
“When I saw the announcement in the Food for the Hungry (FH) newsletter, I did a double take: David Evans and his family become Hunger Corps staff in Guatemala. I wondered how such an erroneous announcement could have possibly made it through the editors of the newsletter. I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that [...]

Water+soap+hands=alive
I could see a group of mothers and their children standing outside the gate of the turquoise-colored school building, still half-shrouded in the morning mist. The kids were so small and scared – especially terrified of the tall white lady (me) with the camera. It was hard to imagine them starting kindergarten, because they were so [...]

Middle Schoolers Give Hope for Christmas
I had the privilege of speaking to an amazing woman named Donna Nelson the other day. She’s helping children see beyond themselves. In the process, these children are experiencing the idea that happiness comes from contributing rather than receiving. They are seeing that great things can be accomplished when people pull together toward a common [...]

A singer, pastor and attorney in the heart of Guatemala
Another country? In my last few blog posts, I’ve been sharing about my experiences from a recent trip to Nicaragua. What I haven’t mentioned is that after spending eight days in Nicaragua, my coworker and I flew one hour north and spent another week in Guatemala. I can’t begin to describe the drastic difference between [...]

We Interrupt This Monotonous & Agitating Political Season for a TRUE Message of HOPE
This is not a stump speech, an endorsement, or even a subversive political plea.
This is a reminder and a gift. A message of hope.
As our TV’s sets and news feeds monotonously tune in to the steady screeching of political debate, party pundits and campaigning figureheads, I believe it is important to take a deep breath, and REMEMBER THE POOR. There is no doubt that any election is an important and historical event. We should care about elected leaders, their ideas and what they stand for. But let’s not loose sight of the most monumental opportunities of hope we may ever face.

On my desk…Helpless…but praying
Reflecting on my first trip to the field You may have noticed that my title did not say ‘On my desk this week.’ As I’m writing posts about what I’m working on each week, I realized there are so many things I’ve worked on in the past that did not get the opportunity to be [...]

FH Phoenix staff visit Guatemala
In February 2011, Katie Stall and I traveled to Guatemala for our first field visit. We both wanted to see FH’s work in the field. We had spent the last three years, stuffing envelopes and packets, reading and sorting mail, and talking to countless sponsors on the phone—but always desiring to see it all for [...]

Pen, paper and a future in Guatemala
The photographer’s caption tells me the image comes from a place where Food for the Hungry works called “Rio Azul,” or “Blue River,” in Guatemala’s Ixil Triangle region. But I see a story far beyond a young child poised to draw something. The green in little boy’s sweater mirrors the thick vegetation I remember from [...]
