The month of June is when Americans celebrate Father’s Day. And FH likes to expand that celebration to fathers all over the world. But finding fathers can be difficult where FH works, because many fathers must migrate for work. making them absent from their homes for months at a time. I found an article that was [...]
When God created us, He gave us the freedom and ability to rule over everything else he created — plants, land, animals and organisms. But I have heard people interpret this blessing a variety of ways. Does it mean His creation is at our disposal, to use as we please? Or is it a call to care for living things and steward our natural resources well?
Women in developing countries often aren’t thought of as leaders. Food for the Hungry (FH) helps communities reverse that thinking. An example of a woman becoming a leader is Yubo Boru, a 35-year-old mother of four children living in Kenya. Rather than going to school when she was a girl, Yubo would carry as much water as she [...]
Please pray for peaceful elections in Kenya. Elections are only a means to both a moral and political end. We must pray that Kenya’s elections are conducted in peace. And that the culminating decisions of the nation, comprised of the millions of individual votes, cast by its own citizens, is a vote for the reign of peace.
Food for the Hungry is celebrating Christmas all over the world. In Phoenix, Ariz., our Food for the Hungry Christmas party included a rousing rendition of “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” which required 60 staff people to act out all 12 of the gifts. We scarfed down delicious food, then chose from a whole range of desserts [...]
One of the best things about old friends is, they remind you how far you’ve come. I chatted with my long-time colleague Rick this morning about how communication has changed since we started international development work. We both remembered when letters took weeks to travel home, before e-mail and Skype were options. My mind went [...]
This is guest blogger, Amanda Sleister of H20 Church from Orlando, Fla. She recently returned from a trip to Parkishon, Kenya, where she met her sponsored child, who she describes as “quite possibly the most beautiful girl in the world.” Here is Amanda’s blog: Oh Cecilia…. She captured my heart in 2007 when she was [...]
This is not a stump speech, an endorsement, or even a subversive political plea.
This is a reminder and a gift. A message of hope.
As our TV’s sets and news feeds monotonously tune in to the steady screeching of political debate, party pundits and campaigning figureheads, I believe it is important to take a deep breath, and REMEMBER THE POOR. There is no doubt that any election is an important and historical event. We should care about elected leaders, their ideas and what they stand for. But let’s not loose sight of the most monumental opportunities of hope we may ever face.
The AIDS 2012 Conference will be taking place in Washington, D.C., from July 22-27. In anticipation of this gathering that will connect AIDS experts from around the world, PBS’ Frontline aired a program this week on the disease, specifically as it has affected African Americans. You may imagine that Magic Johnson and his famous admission [...]
My grandparents are retired and have a winter home in northern Arizona. Sitting on the porch swing a slight breeze brushes through my hair. A sweet flowery smell fills there property… no flowers to be found. In the middle of the desert, an hour from the nearest town… we’ve named it the healing place. Mending [...]
