I love how simple actions can prevent big hairy problems… like malaria. According to the World Health Organization, malaria claims the lives of 660,000 people annually; most of those deaths are babies in Africa. Today is World Malaria Day, when we remember that half of the world’s population lives in areas at risk of malaria transmission. [...]

Finding our fathers again
Here is part two of series of three from my guest blogger, Jason Wellnitz, author of the book, “River Way Home.” His book was inspired by a trip to a Food for the Hungry community in Mozambique. Novelist inspired by Sunday school
Meet Jason Wellnitz…my guest blogger. He’s written a novel inspired by a trip to Mozambique with Food for the Hungry. Read about his experience and what he did in response to what he saw. June 2011, Gorangosa, Mozambique. Our driver turned the white minibus off the main paved road and down onto a red, rutted [...]

Thanks to the One True God
I haven’t seen too many situations where people beg to be allowed to give thanks. But living overseas in South America, in the highlands of Bolivia, my Food for the Hungry office friends asked one year if we could celebrate a full American Thanksgiving dinner – for SIXTY people. Six-oh. Those of us of the [...]

We Interrupt This Monotonous & Agitating Political Season for a TRUE Message of HOPE
This is not a stump speech, an endorsement, or even a subversive political plea.
This is a reminder and a gift. A message of hope.
As our TV’s sets and news feeds monotonously tune in to the steady screeching of political debate, party pundits and campaigning figureheads, I believe it is important to take a deep breath, and REMEMBER THE POOR. There is no doubt that any election is an important and historical event. We should care about elected leaders, their ideas and what they stand for. But let’s not loose sight of the most monumental opportunities of hope we may ever face.

Becoming a wife and a mother, while still a child – Part 1
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be born a girl — a girl born into poverty versus one born into wealth — and how incredibly different their paths can be. We’ve examined in recent posts how gender-based injustice inhibits a girl’s chances at getting education, having a voice in society, protecting her own [...]

Guest blog — Rock band visits Africa and builds clean-water wells
The Christian rock back Willet has been a treasured partner of FH for many years, helping find sponsors for hundreds of children in need and raising enough money to build 15 clean-water wells in the country of Mozambique. The four band members speak passionately about God’s heart for the poor and our response as His followers. Here, drummer Tyler [...]

Lies that spread HIV in Mozambique
Ever since the Garden of Eden, the devil has used lies to destroy people and separate us from God. Sometimes, he can be very sneaky and hard to detect, but other times, it’s easy to see his work. In many places in Mozambique, the devil’s lies trap generation after generation of families in extreme poverty. [...]

Four ways poverty increases a girl’s risk of sexual abuse
If most victims of sexual abuse are girls or women, and if people living in poverty are more susceptible to sexual abuse (source), then girls living in poverty are extremely vulnerable. In many rural villages in Mozambique, where physical and spiritual poverty often blankets families with disease, fear of ancestral spirits, and a lethargic view [...]
