Bridges to Understanding

I hurt my foot the other day. It wasn’t serious, but it caused me to limp. I didn’t want to limp. I didn’t want the attention or the inevitable questions. After a while, I mostly forgot about the limp, unless someone noticed and asked. Even when I was walking as “normally” as I could, my […]

The World Cup Effect: Hope Through a Level Playing Field

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup. There is nothing like it in the world of sports. Thirty-two countries. Six continents. One sport. When it comes to global popularity, not even the Olympics match the fervor and fame of the World Cup. It is truly global in representation, viewership and scale. Every four years […]

FH Draft Picks: Top 5 for Fighting Poverty

I am admittedly a huge fan of the National Football League (NFL). The New England Patriots are like family members to me. But strangely enough, the most exciting time of year for me as a football fan is not during the season … it’s now! On May 8, the NFL draft will captivate the imaginations […]

Leadership of Global Countenance

In Kenya, the dust from our Land Rovers had just settled when a group of nomadic pastoralists approached us. I was with some of Food for the Hungry’s (FH) board members to see FH’s work in the field. Many will remember the tsunami on December 26, 2004, that wiped out large parts of Indonesia and Thailand. The final death toll was more than 230,000 people, with millions more left homeless. At the time, it spurred the largest humanitarian response in history. When news began to trickle in about the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines earlier this month, it brought back vivid memories of similar circumstances from the preceding Asian disaster. Here are three lessons to consider from the 2004 Indonesia Tsunami.

Trickle-down Compassion

My wife and I are days away from the arrival of our first child. It’s a crazy time when you know that you are on the edge of such a life-changing experience. The end of one phase of life, and the beginning of another. It is both exciting and nerve-racking … but ultimately… it’s just […]

Inspiring Hope: “All things are possible for one who believes…”

Confession: I am an optimist. I feel stronger when I’m positive. When asked what kind of animal best defines my personality, I answer…Golden Retriever. The glass is always half full. And in college, I was dubbed “sunshine” for my best-case-scenario outlooks that matched my abnormally blonde mane and glowing complexion. But I’m also a product […]
